Writing Tips How to Use Commas and Semicolons Part 2 Need some writing help with how to use commas and semicolons? Check out Part 1 of this series if you haven’t already, then read on for more punctuation rules and how to fix a comma splice. Semicolons are the proper punctuation marks to use when you want to connect two strings of words that could stand on their own as full sentences, but that are so closely related that you want to make them part of the same sentence. If you read my article last week, you saw some examples of that.   Heres how it works: The following word strings could all  stand as sentences on their own: In high school I was certain of my academic strengths. The daughter and younger sister of doctors, I excelled in math and science and dreaded every English course I was ever forced to take. Addison’s Disease is a chronic adrenal insufficiency that leads to liver failure, kidney failure, effusions, and in some cases, death. I was determined that it would not kill my brother. When you put a comma between two sentences, it is called a “comma splice” and it is an incorrect way to use a comma! The following is an INCORRECT use of a comma: [INCORRECT] In high school I was certain of my academic strengths, I excelled in math and science. See how each of the two parts of the sentence can stand on its own? In high school I was certain of my academic strengths. I excelled in math and science. You can fix a comma splice in one of three ways: 1.   Replace the comma with a period: [CORRECT] In high school I was certain of my academic strengths. I excelled in math and science. 2. Add a conjunction, such as or or and,  after the comma: [CORRECT] In high school I was certain of my academic strengths, and excelled in math and science. 3. If the sentences are closely related,  replace the comma with a semi-colon: [CORRECT] In high school I was certain of my academic strengths; I excelled in math and science. Conversely, if you have two parts of your sentence that do NOT stand on their own, it is INCORRECT to connect them with a semicolon. Here are two examples of an INCORRECT use of a semicolon: [INCORRECT] Finally you can convert all those friends on Facebook into something useful; spreading the word about your skills, experience and what a great hire you would make. Can you see that while the first part of this sentence is a sentence (“Finally you can convert all those friends on Facebook into something useful.”), the second part of the sentence is NOT a sentence (“Spreading the word about your skills, experience and what a great hire you would make.”).   Therefore   it is INCORRECT to divide them with a semicolon; a comma would have been the correct punctuation mark to insert between them. Another example: [INCORRECT] The Justice Action Center would allow me to study and work in anti-discrimination law and criminal law; a few areas for which I have gained a passion. Again, the second part of this sentence, “a few areas for which I have gained a passion,” does NOT stand on its own as a sentence, so we need a comma. If you use your ear here, you’ll HEAR the difference.   Read the sentences aloud, and you will hear an upward inflection after the word “useful” in the first example and “law” in the second example. This upward inflection indicates what?   You got it. A comma. Here are the correctly punctuated sentences: [CORRECT] Finally you can convert all those friends on Facebook into something useful, spreading the word about your skills, experience and what a great hire you would make. Did Racism Precede Slavery Free Essays

ESSAY There have been debates among scholars over whether racism preceded slavery or vice versa. Present an argument on this question using course materials (lectures, readings, film) While some argue that racism preceded slavery, I firmly believe that racism did not precede slavery. Before examining the reasons behind my opinion, it is important to note how race feeds into racism, and how slavery then latches on to racism. As a result, different racial groups are formed with the White race occupying the top position of this hierarchy. Because of this skin-color based hierarchy, White people developed a sense of superiority and dominance over the Black people who lie at the bottom of this hierarchy. This perception of being superior and dominant over another race based on this hierarchy is racism. A connection between slavery and racism can then be formed when the White elites decide to only enslave the Black people when they feel their dominance and superiority is jeopardized in one way or the other. Therefore, the components of racism and slavery together form racialized slavery. Holistically speaking, a three-part system involving race, racism and slavery is effectively formed. While keeping components of this system in mind, it is also necessary to consider how money, productivity and social relations influence my view. When British settlers entered the New World, among their priorities was to hire relatively inexpensive slave labor to generate profits for them. While the freely available, local Native Americans were auditioned, the White settlers realized they had to look elsewhere. Native Americans died via diseases contracted by White settlers, and as a result were neither fully adaptable to slave labor nor productive. Instead, White settlers turned to indentured servitude. As discussed in lecture, indentured servitude saw White settlers import fellow British people and ordered them to work like slaves on cheap, 5-7 year contracts. However, this method of labor was not entirely successful since indentured servants too contracted diseases from settlers and died in numbers, while settlers also couldn’t dictate work conditions once their contracts expired. At this point, the frustrated White settlers wanted to bring in a people on whom they could place unlimited workloads to maximize productivity. This was when the British settlers turned to the African market. While the first British colonialists arrived in 1607, the first Africans were not brought in until 1619. (Week 3 powerpoint, â€Å"slavery-1†, slide 7) It is thus wrong to say that racism prompted and preceded the enslavement of Africans, since it was instead the failure of the Native Americans along with high mortality rates and contract laws of indentured servants that preceded and induced the enslavement of Africans. Moreover, the desire to become wealthier, not racism, convinced White settlers to enslave Africans. After failing with indentured servitude, White settlers imported Africans in pursuit of maximizing productivity and consequently receiving higher profits. As we discussed in class, planters in Virginia were aware of the rewards they could reap by enslaving Africans. Unlike the indentured servants contracts that limited the duration of work summoned by White settlers, enslaving Africans meant that planters could put no limits on the amount of work and time they ordered of them. Therefore, the more work you assign to slaves for much longer periods, the more productivity you get, and the more money your plantation gets you. On top of this though, planters also wanted more slaves to increase the supply of money they ultimately received. Accordingly, â€Å"state laws adopted the principle of partus sequitur ventrem- the child follows the condition of the mother regardless of the race of the father. † (Cannon, 1993, p. 415) Thanks to this law, enslaved mothers gave birth to enslaved children who went on to become extra pairs of hands on plantations. In the case of children being enslaved because of their enslaved mothers, racism once again does not precede slavery. Since child enslavement holds â€Å"regardless of the race of the father†, (Cannon, 1993, p. 415) it is the mother’s status as a slave and not race that precedes and assigns the same title to her children. White settlers wanted enslavement to be cyclical, and it is for this reason why enslaved women were valuable; they produced and reproduced. Although African enslavement eventually became slavery as torture only applicable to Africans, racism does not precede slavery here. As more Africans were imported for enslavement purposes, the White elites’ fears exacerbated. Even though African enslavement was the principal answer to increased wealth for White planters, indentured servitude was not extinct. Friendships between Africans and lower-class Whites existed, and the White elites were concerned these alliances would undermine their summoning powers and provoke a class insurrection. It was at this juncture in 1660 that racialized slavery in Virginia (Week 3 powerpoint, â€Å"slavery-1†, slide 7), a product of components in the system, was only specific to the Africans. Not only did racialized slavery prevent a class conflict between Whites, but also brought racism to the fore. As a system component in this case, racism is a perception of superiority and dominance from the White elites’ to the Africans. Hence, racialized slavery again supports my view since it was the enslavement of Africans and their interactions with lower-class Whites that preceded and incited racism. One can easily get confused by racism and slavery, and claim that slavery would never have occurred without an onslaught of racism. However, the series of events involving White settlers, Native Americans, indentured servants and imported Africans are most logical when we argue that racism did not precede slavery. If the White settlers were racists ever since they arrived in the New World, indentured servitude would never have existed. Without the interaction of Africans and lower-class Whites, racialized slavery would not have been legitimatized, and Black people would not have been historically associated with slavery the most. Smashing Pumpkins - Adore free essay sample

Need some new music? Try the new release from the Smashing Pumpkins, Adore. Even if youre not a fan of this particular band, thats no reason to automatically hate their newest release. Adore includes the newly released single Perfect and previously released Ava Adore. This is the best overall album of the fall. With band members DArcy playing bass, James Iha on guitar and Billy Corgan singing and playing the piano, this band has it made. This album has songs off the Smashing Pumpkins usual path. The soul-felt lyrics make you want to hear the songs over and over. Some songs are a fast pace while others slow it down, with others in the middle. I found the songs enjoyable. Its definitely their best album yet, in my opinion. Their other albums, Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness, Siamese Dream and others, just dont have the same kind of tune as Adore. DC Sniper essays

DC Sniper essays The mystery of why, how, and who are all questions that needs to be answered. People are scared and want these mysteries to end, so that they can go back to living without fear. The shootings need to stop. The possibilities of who could be the D.C. Sniper are endless, but when I first thought about it, terrorists were the first suspect I look to for an answer. It seemed to be the easiest group of people to put the blame on, because the killings were so random and it was circa the nations capital, the only two pieces of evidence that I had to go on. As I listened to the news for the next week, I realized that not even the cops had a lead to go on, so I definitely didnt know who to suspect. It could be anyone. The number of killings has grown to nine and eleven have been shot by the so called D.C. Sniper without motivate. That is the scariest thing about it, we dont know his reasons. No motivate killings strike me as terrifying. A person killing another person with a reason, even though still not right, gives the public a sort of a conclusion to why. The medias coverage of the shootings have been as detailed as possible, they have been covering it 24 hours a day. The media can only receive half of the story though, because the police can not leek out details to the shooter. The police probably have tons of information that is not permitted to be released and all of the students surveyed at Elon agree with me. And believe that it is a good idea that the police do so. The D.C. Sniper could be watching the Television and maybe use the information to his advantage. The media is doing as good of a job, on covering the shootings, as possible. But the question should be asked, why the media is hyping and publicizing the shootings as much as they are. People are starting to get paranoid and afraid to do certain things outside of their homes in the Washington D.C ...

SAT Overview: Sections and Timing Before we start looking in-depth at what subjects are on the SAT, let’s first get a broad overview of what the SAT covers. There are three main sections on the SAT: Reading, Writing and Language, and Math. There is also an optional essay. Section Minutes Given Number of Questions Reading 65 52 Writing and Language 35 44 Math 80 58 Essay (Optional) 50 1 Total 3 hours, 50 minutes (3 hours without the essay) 154 (+1 essay prompt) The SAT sections will always go in this order, beginning with Reading and ending with (if you choose to take it), the SAT Essay.The Math section is divided into two groups, the first of whichyou can’t use a calculator (25 minutes and 20 questions), and the second, where a calculator is allowed (55 minutes and 38 questions). Below, for each section of the SAT, I’ll explain what subjects it covers. What Subjects Are on the SAT Reading? All questions on SAT Reading are based on passages.The SAT Reading section contains five passages with 52 multiple-choice questions, which means there will be about 10-12 questions for each passage.Some passages are paired with other passages, and some have graphics, such as tables, graphs, and charts accompanying them. There will be at least one passage from each of the following topics: U.S. or world literature U.S. founding document or a text inspired by one Social science (such as economics, psychology, sociology, etc.) Science (Earth science, biology, chemistry, or physics) SAT Reading tests the following skills: Command of Evidence:Finding evidence in a passage that supports the answer to a question. Words in Context:Use context clues to determine the meaning of a word. Analysis in History/Social Science and Science:Examine hypotheses, interpret data, and consider implications Subjects This Section Covers Even though the SAT Reading passages will be on different subjects such as literature, science, and social science, you don’t need to worry about having any prior knowledge on what each passage discusses. You'll be able to answer all the questions based on information provided in the passage, so you don’t need to worry about memorizing information on biology, U.S. documents, etc. beforehand. The SAT Reading section primarily tests critical reading skills such as the ability to read a passage and understand the conclusions the author makes, being able to understand what certain vocabulary means, and the ability to analyzethe relationship between graphics and the passages theyaccompany. The skills you use for this section are similar to the skills you use in your English classes when you're reading a book, article, or other form of writing. For both your class and the exam, you'll need to be able to analyze the piece of writing and the author's intentions. What Subjects Are on the SAT Writing and Language? Like the Reading section, all questions in the SAT Writing and Language are based on passages.There will be four passages and a total of 44 questions, which means each passage will be followed by 11 questions. Each passage will each cover one of the following subjects: Careers, Social Studies, Humanities, and Science. Careers passages could discuss trends or debates in major professional fields, such as medicine, technology, or business. Social studies passages might focus on topics from history, anthropology, psychology, political science, or sociology. Humanities passages could feature an author or explore trends in literature, drama, art, music, or dance. Science passages will focus on Earth science, biology, chemistry, or physics. The passages will either be argument-based, explanatory, or nonfiction narrative.Also, at least one passage will also be accompanied by a diagram, such as a chart, table, or graph.Each of these passages will be riddled with errors in punctuation, word choice, sentence structure, and organization. The questions in this section will ask you to identify and fix these errors. SAT Writing covers four major skills areas: Command of Evidence, Words in Context, Expression of Ideas, and Standard English Conventions. About 24 questions will focus on Command of Evidence, Words in Context, and Expression of Ideas. These questions ask about development, organization, and effective language use.About 20 questions will focus on Standard English Conventions. These questions ask about sentence structure, usage, and punctuation. Subjects This Section Covers SAT Writing and Language questions focus on three main subject areas. You've likely covered these three subjects in your English or Writing classes as you write and edit your work and other's work. Grammar These questions will test your ability to fix grammar errorsand correctly identify errors in verb tenses and forms, pronoun agreement, subject-verb agreement, run-on sentences and fragments, idioms, and punctuation rules. Grammarquestions make up about 45% of the Writing and Language section. Style Style questions test your ability to analyze word choice, sentence construction, and paragraph construction. These questions make up about 7% of the section. Reading Comprehension For reading comprehension questions in this section, you'll need to be able to understandwhy certain words or sentences are used in a given passage or if they should be replaced with other words or sentences. Reading Comprehension questions make up approximately 48% of the section. What Subjects Are on the SAT Math? SAT Math is composed of two sections. The first, during which you will have no calculator, is 25 minutes and consists of 15 multiple-choice questions and 5 grid-in questions. The second section, during which a calculator is allowed, is 55 minutes and has 30 multiple-choice questions and 8 grid-ins, including an Extended Thinking question. College Board sorts the question types into three main subject areas: Heart of Algebra Passport to Advanced Math Problem Solving and Data Analysis There is also a fourth category, called Additional Topics, which includes about 10% of the SAT Math section and includes questions on geometry, basic trigonometry, and complex numbers. Subjects This Section Covers SAT Math covers 24 main topics, within four main sections. The first two sections below, basic algebra and advanced algebra, both fit within the College Board's "Heart of Algebra" subject area. COMPARATIVE Homer Winslow and Jules Breton, two men painting the canvas of the nineteenth century. Comparing their art gives birth to numerous differences and unique qualities hidden within their work and lives. Dressing For The Carnival, Homer 1877, and The Weeders, Breton 1868, are fine examples of their careers as artists. "Beyond the aesthetic merits of his work, Breton is significant as the painter whose vision of French rural life best embodies a set of late nineteenth- century ideals: the charm and wholesomeness of rustic ways, the nobility of living close to the soil, the beauty of preindustrial landscape, and the social harmony of the agrarian community." ( Sturges) Breton’s work was unique in content, painting for himself, impressing his personal values to the viewer. Although he did not fit the mold, by producing classical and historical works, there were other artists struggling with expression and values of a newer mind, artists like Winslow Homer. "While he was at work in Petersburg, it became known to a group of fine young fire-eaters that he was consorting w ith the blacks, and they resolved to drive him out of town as a ‘d-d nigger-painter.’ Word had come to him that the place was to be made too hot for him, but he paid no attention to the warning." ( Hendricks) Both Breton and Homer were leaders for impressionism, however, the two works mentioned above vary greatly. Both artists focused on similar subject matter, figures in a scene or landscape. However a closer observation of specific images, narrative, symbols, sources, and process divide the two pieces to separate sides of late eighteen hundreds paintings. Physical elements such as composition, position of figures in space, brush work, color, viewpoint, and surface treatment all contribute to this separation of similar subject matter. The composition of The Weeders is un cropped, fairly balanced and symmetrical. The foreground is bold, the middle ground is expansive and the back ground strong and deep. Our view is that of perhaps a weeder on the field. Homer’s Carnival is cropped and less symmetrical with figures emerging from off the canvas. Less emphasis is placed on use of foreground, in turn creating less depth. Breton’s figures hold much movement and expression, women working the field are crouched close to the viewer. Farther back a woman stands alone, basket full, gaze and body positioned toward the setting sun. The women weeding are bent and tired.

It looks at sustainability as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility and views critical analysis of the automobile industry to enable making balanced conclusions. Introduction A report by the Un ited Nations entitled Our Common Future (1987) defined sustainable development as ‘development, which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In addition to this, so called ‘intergenerational equity’ has remained a theme in defining environmental sustainability. Essentially it means seeking the minimization of any adverse (long-term) impacts on future generations. The aim of this report is to investigate the actualizations of the aforesaid principles in the corporate actions of Audi AG. Audi AG is a motor vehicle manufacturer, which comprises of the brands Audi, Ducati and Lamborghini. It is a multinational company (MNE) that employs some 46,000 people and has an annual output of over 1,3 million units.Audi AG is part of Volkswagen Group, headquartered from Ingolstadt, Germany. 1. Audi AG Sustainability Procedures 1. 1 Technologies Audi admits that a car manufacturer can never claim to have a p ositive impact on the environment. They are, however, investing billions of pounds in responsible technologies. These include lightweight space frames, diesel engines and Start-Stop technologies. The purpose of these is to reduce fuel consumption and hence cut CO2 emissions. 1. 2 Waste & water management Audi’s slogan ‘Advancement Through Technology’ essentially outlines the company’s principle of constant innovation.The brand values also state that corporate activities are â€Å"shaped by the desire to preserve resources and take a responsible approach to the environment†. They have undertaken numerous actions to introduce these principles. For instance, assembly line waste is separated & sorted on-site and packaging is optimised in the planning stage, which reduce transport needs substantially. Audi uses various sources of energy, such as a local waste processing plant and the Combined Heat, Cooling and Power production facility (CHCP) in the Ingo lstadt factory.Together they save the company 37,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. For car production the company collects rainwater. They also feed 96. 3 per cent of total water into a closed-loop system, so only a very small amount of water is lost. Moreover, Audi encourages recycling vehicle parts and batteries. As a result their production output has substantially increased in the last two decades but overall energy use has remained virtually the same. Figure 1. 3. Figure 1. 3 illustrates the decrease in waste water volume per vehicle in Audi’d main production plants in Germany between the years 1990 and 1999.The total decrease is 4,5m3/vehicle in Neckarsulm and correspondingly 2,3m3/vehicle in Ingolstadt. 2. Sustainability as a part of Audi’s CSR 2. 1 Audi Environmental Foundation Audi’s commitment to the environment and society is an integral part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The most compelling evindence is the Audi Environmental Foundation Ltd . , which takes voluntary action in environmental, social and economic issues by conducting and funding research projects. 2. 2 Environmental Pact for Bavaria & EMASAudi was a founder member of the Environmental Pact for Bavaria, which now includes around 1,350 companies. The Pact was formed in 1995 as a voluntary agreement between the Bavarian industry and government to do more for the environment. The Pact includes Audi’s European plants participating in the EC Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). The purpose of this is to introduce an environmental management system, which helps improve operational environmental protection on site. 2. 4 RecognitionBased on the above-mentioned policies it can be stated that as a car manufacturer Audi is advanced in promoting sustainability. Audi has also received recognition for this, such as the 2012 Logistics Sustainability Prize. Audi works diligently to improve its image as a â€Å"green† company. Audi of America President Joh an de Nysschen’s spoke at the company’s 100th Anniversary celebration in 2009 (Audi MediaServices, 2009): â€Å"We and our consumers (also) want to drive at something better – a more sustainable future.   The company also published a commercial for the 2010 Super Bowl entitled â€Å"Green Police† where they track down Americans who stick to carbon-unfriendly practices. This was seen as a change of marketing strategy and it received mixed reviews. 3. Criticism 3. 1 General criticism towards the automobile industry The arrival of thousands of motor vehicles in large cities has given the pollution problem completely new dimensions. Research shows that car exhaust contributes half of the (atmospheric) pollutants in large cities and contributes to the â€Å"Greenhouse effect† raising the Earth’s temperature.Among other manufacturers, Audi has hence carried out developments of alternative power sources such as electric and internal combustion e ngines, which gives them a competitive edge. 3. 2 â€Å"Greenwashing† Greenwashing  is a form of propaganda in Public Relations (PR) where green marketing is misleadingly used to create an illusion of an organization's aims and policies being environmentally friendly. After publishing their 2010 Super Bowl commercial â€Å"Green Police† Audi was accused of greenwashing. Creating what is perceived as a genuinely environmentally friendly strategy in all their functional areas is one of their largest current challenges.A quote from Jamey Boiter's  Brand Innovatr blog (Fast Company, 2010): â€Å"†¦Audi are evolving – – They must commit to this evolution in everything about their brands, from product development to communications to industry involvement, to prove they are not greenwashing. † One of Audi’s strengths is that they have been involved in responsible projects for years, dating back to as long as 1960. That being said, their mo st significant competitors such as BMW & Mercedes Benz are increasingly starting to embrace sustainable strategies, which forms a possible threat to Audi.Conclusions The automotive industry is still perceived as one of the largest agents of adverse effects to the environment. As a result of consumers becoming more sophisticated and educated on environmental sustainability, the competition in the industry gets more intense. It can be recommended for Audi to shift their marketing strategy even more towards sustainability and practice product differentiation to this direction whenever possible. Audi should try shaking off the â€Å"greenwashing† claims and coming across as a genuinely responsible corporation.Taking advantage of the decades’ worth of experience and data that they have gathered could do this and possibly gain them a head start from their competitors.
